Richard Garey combines his love of the stage with his love of history and literature. He is an actor, writer, director, and historian. All the material in his shows come from original sources and are authentic in every detail.

Garey develops original theater productions exploring the American experience in arts and literature. He has performed his original, one-man shows in theaters and performing arts centers, on university campuses, in schools, and for conventions and churches. His other one-man shows include A Shepherd’s Tale, Centurion, and My Friend Will Shakespeare. His most recent show is a two-actor play featuring Charles Dickens and Mark Twain called On the Seventh Day of Christmas.

In a theater career that spans over four decades, Richard Garey has performed everything from Shakespeare to musicals, taught theater and literature, appeared in television commercials, and directed numerous plays and musicals.

Nineteen years ago the production of Mark Twain Himself came home to Hannibal, Missouri, the boyhood home of Mark Twain. In July 2003 Garey discovered the historic Planters Barn in downtown Hannibal built during Twain’s boyhood years. He purchased the historic building as a permanent home for Mark Twain Himself and a center for the arts. It also houses the Mississippi River Art Gallery.

In November 2009 Mr. Garey performed Mark Twain in Bermuda in Bermuda’s City Hall Theatre to help the island Celebrate its 400th Anniversary. In 2010 “The Year of Mark Twain” traveled widely performing the “100 Year Tour.” Garey has been interviewed on PBS’s “All Things Considered” and has appeared on the CBS “Sunday Morning” show. Over the last two years he appeared on television in Germany, China, and Japan. In 2017 Garey published a book of poetry based on his Hannibal research called Hannibal at the Door. In 2019 Mark Twain Himself won Best of the Midwest for Missouri Theaters by Midwest Travel Magazine. Garey has just finished a novel called Sam Clemens’ Last Summer.
